Amelia Whitmore
London, UK · Senior Suite
I came for three weeks to research the Straits-born Chinese community for my doctoral thesis. The estate was well-suited to that kind of work: a proper desk, good light, fast wi-fi, and the library upstairs was actually useful — two volumes I had not been able to track down in London were sitting on the shelf.
The breakfast in the court was a quiet hour that I came to rely on. The manager is helpful without being intrusive.

Kuala Lumpur · Court Room
I had a week in Penang for my sister's wedding preparations and needed somewhere better than a hotel for that length of time. The Court Room was more spacious than I expected — the court view was genuinely pleasant in the mornings, and the cross-ventilation meant the room was cool without needing the air conditioning on constantly.
The minimum-stay requirement initially gave me pause but turned out to be the right approach for the room.

Marc Vande Berg
Ghent, Belgium · Verandah Apartment
Six weeks in the Verandah Apartment while completing a conservation consultancy brief for the state. The apartment is genuinely self-contained — the kitchen is small but functional, the verandah became my evening workspace, and having a separate sitting room makes a significant difference when you are living and working in the same space.
The estate is quiet and well-run. I would return without hesitation if the work brought me back to Penang.

Tanaka Keiko
Osaka, Japan · Court Room
Five nights for a heritage photography project in George Town. The location on Lebuh Acheh is excellent — I was on the street with my camera by seven each morning without needing transport. The room was straightforward and well-kept, and Norzahra gave me some useful guidance on the back streets that I would not have found on my own.

Singapore · Senior Suite
We spent ten days in the Senior Suite while attending a family occasion in George Town. The balcony above the inner court was a welcome feature in the evenings, and the deep bath was well-used after long days on foot through the heritage zone. Breakfast each morning was exactly right — simple, consistent, and served at a sensible hour.
We did find parking slightly difficult on the street — worth clarifying with the manager before arriving by car.

Patrick O'Sullivan
Dublin, Ireland · Verandah Apartment
A month writing in the Verandah Apartment while on sabbatical. The verandah and garden were a useful place to think — shaded through the afternoon, and quieter than the street front. The wi-fi was reliable throughout and the kitchen made it possible to keep reasonable hours without depending on eating out for every meal.

How Longer Stays Have Worked
The Situation
An architectural historian from the University of Edinburgh needed six weeks in George Town to document the pre-war shophouse typologies of the inner city for a Heritage Council publication. She required a stable workspace, access to reference materials, and a location within walking distance of the buildings she was studying.
How the Estate Served
The Verandah Apartment provided a writing alcove separate from the sleeping space, a small kitchen that allowed her to work early and late without depending on restaurant hours, and the upper-floor library, which held several primary-source volumes on Penang's building heritage. The address on Lebuh Acheh put her within two minutes' walk of her nearest case studies.
The Outcome
The fieldwork was completed within the six-week window. The publication acknowledged the Verandah Apartment as the base for the research period. She has since recommended the estate to colleagues conducting similar work in Penang.
"The apartment and the library together were the right combination for this kind of work."
The Situation
A Singapore-based professional was posted to Penang on a three-month assignment for a regional infrastructure project. His company's housing allowance was suited to a serviced apartment, but he preferred a location in the heritage zone and a more residential arrangement. He had a partner joining him for the middle month.
How the Estate Served
He took the Verandah Apartment for two consecutive fortnights, extending for a further month after discussions with the resident manager about the third period. The sitting room gave him space to conduct work calls from the apartment, the kitchen meant his partner could manage their own meal schedule, and the wi-fi was sufficient for sustained video conferencing.
The Outcome
He completed the posting from the estate across the full three months. The all-inclusive rate structure allowed straightforward expense reporting. He noted afterwards that the choice of a boarding house rather than a serviced apartment improved his experience of the city considerably — being on Lebuh Acheh made George Town accessible rather than peripheral.
"I worked well there. The apartment is quiet and the location is genuinely in the city, not alongside it."
